The BSc programme in electrical engineering is only offered in Danish.

On the MSc in Engineering in Electrical Technology programme, you will be able to design robots, satellites, artificial intelligence, IT and communication networks, drones, medical devices and other advanced, electronic products based on a solid theoretical and engineering academic foundation.

You will learn to develop and analyse modern electronic systems, and you will learn to understand and build bridges between computer technology models (software) and the real world (hardware) with all its limitations and opportunities, enabling you to develop technological solutions to society's digital challenges.

The BSc in Electrical Engineering programme has options to take several different specialist directions, and with an MSc in Engineering you will enter a world badly in need of your skills.

Studying at the university

Teaching on the Electrical Engineering programme consists of a combination of lectures, theory exercises, classroom teaching and laboratory and project work. You will be taught by recognised researchers in the area, and they will also be your guides in various scientific projects. You will be based in and around the University Park, located in the heart of Aarhus. Here you will be part of the university's historical environment, which today is home to a total of 40,000 students and an extensive engineering environment with more than 3,500 engineering students.

Career opportunities

The BSc programme in Electrical Engineering qualifies you for direct admission to the two-year MSc programme of the same name, and you will obtain the title of MSc in Engineering. With this under your belt, you will have a much sought-after business-oriented and research-based qualification profile that will allow you to pursue a career as a specialist and problem-solver in almost any company and research and knowledge institution working on and developing new technology for major global challenges such as health and digitisation.

Technology's front runners

Ever since industrialisation, engineer graduates have been front-runners in the technological revolution, and their technical insight and theoretical understanding have helped them build bridges between research and reality. There is just a short step from theory to practice, and you will have an internationally recognised qualification at high academic and theoretical level, enabling you to independently analyse and resolve technical issues from a social perspective.

Admission requirements

Admission area number: 22134 

 To be eligible for admission to this degree programme, you must fulfil the following requirements:

1.      A qualifying examination.

2.      Grade requirements: You will need both an average grade of at least 7.0 on your overall qualifying examination (incl. any bonus for extra A-level subjects) and an average grade of at least 7.0 in Mathematics A specifically (on the Danish 7-point grading scale).

3.      The following specific admission requirements (Danish upper secondary school):

  • Danish A
  • English B
  • Mathematics A

And one of these combinations:

  • Physics B and Chemistry C or
  • Physics B and Biotechnology A or
  • Geoscience A and Chemistry C   

If there are any subjects you have not completed at the required level, you can take them as supplementary courses or as a summer supplementary course (conditional Admission).

The admission requirements must be met and documented by 5 July in the year of application unless you apply for conditional admission

If you don’t meet the grade requirements

If you don’t meet, or don’t expect to meet, the grade requirements of an average grade of at least 7.0 io your qualifying examination and an average grade of at least 7.0 in Mathematics A, you can apply for admission through an entrance examination. Completing the entrance examination is equivalent to fulfilling the grade requirements, but does not guarantee admission.

Applicants who wish to take part in the entrance examination must apply before the deadline on 15 March at 12:00 (quota 2)

Quota 2

Like quota 1 applicants, quota 2 applicants must have passed a qualifying examination, and they must also fulfil the specific admission requirements above. All quota 2 applicants will be invited to take an entrance examination.

If there are more qualified applicants than quota 2 places, the applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  1. Your score from the entrance examination
  2. Your average grade in Mathematics A
  3. A concrete assessment of your academic qualifications for admission (for example average grade from your qualifying examination, special permission or similar relevant selection criteria).

Regarding admission 2020

If there are more qualified candidates than the number of seats in quota 2, the following criteria will be included in an overall assessment of the applications:

  • Score from the admission test
  • Average of particularly relevant subjects (quota 2 subjects, see below,)

Programme structure

Student life

The daily routine

You will spend most of your time in and around the University Park, which is centrally located in Aarhus with very short distances to everything the city has to offer. Your days on the programme will be spent on lectures, project work, group teaching, laboratory work and problem-solving and there will be plenty of opportunities to socialise with you fellow students. Together, you will organise social events and parties and will be working closely in project groups in which you will forge close relationships both academically and socially.

Teaching is research-based, and therefore you will have access to the latest advances within your field from day one. At the same time, you will be participating in scientific project work with the university's skilled researchers in the field, and they will also be your teachers and supervisors.

The university and the city

At Aarhus University, you will be part of a large engineering environment with more than 3,500 engineering students, and you will be spending time in the university's historical environment that today is home to 40,000 students and 4,000 internationally recognised researchers. The university's many students also make Aarhus one of Denmark's youngest cities, with an average age of just 24 years.

You will therefore be able to get involved in both academic and social student associations with your fellow students. For example, you can enjoy a beer in the Friday bar with the other students, or you can participate in social and academic events such as those organised by the Danish Society of Engineers, IDA.

There is also RIA (Rådet for Ingeniørstuderende i Aarhus), which is the students' mouthpiece and gathering point for a better study environment. RIA is responsible for political and social interests for all engineering students at Aarhus University and it is the hub of social events and activities for students.

You can also take part in the university’s student section of the Engineers Without Borders organisation, which makes an active contribution to a number of humanitarian projects abroad. You can also join the Danish Youth Association of Science - UNF, which organises lectures, study visits and summer camps with scientific and technical content.

The BSc in Electrical Engineering programme qualifies you for direct admission to the two-year MSc programme of the same name and through that, you will obtain the title of MSc in Engineering.

Technological developments have led to a great need for competent MSC in Engineering graduates within electrical engineering, both nationally and internationally. The programme will provide you an opportunity to have an influence on central technology areas in the future of digitised society such as electronics, wireless communications, machine learning, micro- and nano-electronics, optics and photonics.

Electrical engineers find jobs in a wide range of specialist fields, from basic research in engineering or natural sciences to research and development projects in industry and as production engineers.

The programme gives you rich opportunities for a career in virtually any business and research and knowledge institutions working with and developing smart computer-based technologies across industries. For example, you can work with research, development and innovation of drones or autonomous robots, as a technology specialist and problem-solver in a medical company that develops advanced hearing aids, or as an IT communications specialist at a company working with renewable energy.

The theoretical, experimental and practical grounding you will get from the MSc in Engineering programme will also give you a good opportunity to start your own business or take a leading position within research and development.

PhD programme

If you want to, and if you have the skills, after your MSc in Engineering degree, you can apply for a PhD programme. Here, in collaboration with the department's researchers, you will be heading your own research project, and through the course of the project, advanced courses and individual supervision, you will be trained as a researcher yourself.
