All about Quota 1 and 2

Quota 1

To apply in quota 1 you need to hold a qualifying examination comparable to a Danish qualifying examination and fulfil the specific entry requirements to your desired programme(s).

Application deadline and answer to your application

If you have an international entry exam or an International Baccalaureate (IB) exam, the deadline to apply is 15 March at 12.00 noon, also for quota 1 applicants. If you have a Danish qualifying exam, the deadline to apply is 5 July at 12.00 noon. Please notice, that an International Baccalaureate (IB) exam will be considered as an international entry exam even though it is taken in Denmark. Applicants with an International Baccalaureate exam from Denmark, or anywhere else in the world, must therefore apply no later than 15 March at 12.00 noon.

You can apply for admission through www.optagelse.dk

You will receive an answer to your application on 26 July.

Who will be admitted?

The assessment in quota 1 is based on the first completed qualifying examination and the principle of descending order of grade point average (GPA). This means, that applicants with the highest GPA will be admitted until all student places have been taken. The last applicant’s GPA is the GPA cut-off, and this is first known when the entire admission process is completed on 26 July.

If you apply to a degree programme with unlimited access you are assured a student place provided you meet the admission requirements and provided you have chosen the programme as your first priority.

You cannot improve the GPA from your first qualifying examination. However, you are welcome to take supplementary courses in order to fulfil the admission requirements. The grades from your supplementary courses will not be used in the quota 1 assessment.

Quota 2

All quota 2 applicants must fulfil the requirement of having a qualifying examination comparable to a Danish qualifying examination and fulfil the specific entry requirements to the desired programme(s).

All applications in quota 2 are evaluated specifically and individually.

Application deadline

The deadline to apply is no later than 15 March at 12.00 noon. You must apply at www.optagelse.dk.

You will receive an answer to your application on 26 July.

You must document your qualifications in quota 2

When you apply for admission in quota 2, you must document your qualifications correctly. If you do not document your qualifications, they will not be part of your quota 2 assessment.

Before you apply, it is very important that you find out which qualifications are important for the specific programme you wish to apply for. On bachelor.au.dk/en/, you can find the programme you are interested in and see which qualifications to document.

Deadline for documenting your qualifications

All qualifications must be completed and documented no later than 15 March.

Quota 2 criteria for the English taught programmes

Depending on the programme(s) you wish to apply for, there are different types of quota 2 criteria. Below you can read about the quota 2 selection criteria for our English taught Bachelor’s degree programmes.

If you are looking for general information on the different quota 2 criteria that apply for Danish taught programmes at Aarhus University, please read the Danish version of this website.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact us at ba.admission@au.dk.

Quota 2 GPA

Your quota 2 GPA is your Grade Point Average of the quota 2 subjects for the programme(s) you are applying for.

How is your quota 2 GPA calculated?

Example 1

Grades on the Danish 7-point grading scale

English B               7

Mathematics B    10

History B               12

Total: (7+10+12)/3= 9,7

The quota 2 GPA is therefore 9,7 on the Danish 7-point grading scale in this example.

Please note that in some cases there may be several grades registered for each single subject as we use grades from state exams as well as the grades from the last year of the upper secondary education. In this case, an average will be used for each subject to calculate the quota 2 GPA.

Applicants with an English language test

Please note that when you take an English language test you will not be able to see a grade for your English subject on MyApplication.au.dk.

Applicants with an English language test will go through a special assessment which will compensate for the missing grade in the overall quota 2 assessment. The special assessment is a part of the overall quota 2 assessment.

Example 2

Grade on the Danish 7-point grading scale

English B               0

Mathematics B    10

History B                12

Total: (0+10+12)/3= 7,3

In this example, the applicant has taken an English language test and their quota 2 GPA is therefore 7,3 on the Danish 7-point grading scale. This application will therefore automatically be sent for a special assessment.

You can see your quota 2 GPA on MyApplication.au.dk.

When you have applied for a programme, you will receive a link for MyApplication.au.dk. During June you will be able to see your quota 2 GPA and how it is calculated.

Here is an example of how the calculation for your quota 2 GPA will be shown at MyApplication.au.dk:

(ENG B (0)+MAT B (10)+HIS B (12)/3:(0+10+12)/3=7,3

Relevant qualifications

What are relevant qualifications?

When we assess your quota 2 application, we look at both your grade point average of relevant quota 2 subjects as well as documented relevant qualifications. Based on these two criteria, we make an overall assessment of your quota 2 application.

If we find that you have documented relevant qualifications, we can add 0.4, 1.0, 1.5 or more to your quota 2 GPA, thus improving your overall quota 2 assessment.

Relevant qualifications can be work experience (both paid an unpaid), internships, passed relevant education or if you have studied at a relevant folk high school (højskole).

On our website Bachelor.au.dk, you can find examples of relevant qualifications for the programme you wish to apply for.

In the assessment we check to see if:

  • you have qualifications relevant for the programme(s) you are applying for.
  • you have qualifications of good study skills.

Relevant qualifications for a specific programme

We assess whether your documented activities are relevant for the specific subject area of the programme.

An example would be, if you have taken university courses within international business, accounting, sales, or marketing and are applying for our Economics and Business Administration programme.

Good study skills

We assess whether you have completed activities, aside from your qualifying entry examination, that prepares you to complete a university education. Good study skills can for example be achieved through higher education, folk high schools, or military enlistment.

Examples of non-relevant qualifications:

  • References from teachers
  • Personal statements
  • Work experience that does not relate to the subject matter of the programme you apply for
  • Short preparatory courses for university studies
  • Talent courses in high school
  • Student internship programs
  • Travels abroad that does not relate to the subject matter of the programme you apply for

What do I need to document?

You generally need to document activities of minimum 4 months and maximum 12 months.

We encourage you to upload all documentation to your application even if it is of a shorter time frame. It will not affect your application if the qualifications cannot be taken into consideration. If you document activities of more than 12 months, then we take the activities into account that gives you the best quota 2 assessment.

Documentation guidelines

The documentation deadline for relevant qualifications is 15 March. You need to attach all documentation to your quota 2 application via www.optagelse.dk. The documentation deadline means that only activities documented until or before the 15 March can be taken into consideration.

It is very important that you document your qualifications correctly.

Your documentation must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Your name.
  • Duration of the activity, for example with a start and end date of the activity.
  • Scope of the activity, for example number of hours weekly or number of passed ECTS points.
  • Proof of authenticity, for example stamp and signature of issuing authority.

Examples of documentation:

  • Work experience can be documented with a statement from the employer, management, or HR department. Statements must include time-period, number of hours, description of work tasks and signature.
  • Stays at folk high school can be documented with the certificate of completion and a description of subjects attended.
  • Passed credits from higher education can be documented with a signed and stamped transcript. This is also obligatory if you have previous studies at Aarhus University.

Please note that it is your responsibility that all your documentation complies with our guidelines.

Examples of insufficient documentation:

  • Statement from employers without signature, duration, or number of hours.
  • Flight tickets, boarding passes or travel itineraries to document stays abroad.
  • Study transcripts without stamp and signature from issuing authority.
  • Completion certificate from folk high school without subject list.
  • Pay checks/salary statements to document work experience.
