Development of new digital products and interaction techniques

The Bachelor's degree in IT Product Development is based on fundamental computer science (algorithms, software development, computer and network architecture, and man-machine interaction) in combination with topics in the field of design, such as design theory, physical design, user experience, and social and aesthetic interaction.

This combination makes you capable of understanding and contributing to all activities in the development of Smart Products. Such products could be smart watches/activity trackers, smart home technologies, health technologies and interactive furniture.

The Bachelor's programme in IT Product Development is based on the technical disciplines in information technology, which provides the students with competencies to both develop new concepts as well as implementing smart and digital products. During the first year the students will work full-time in groups on a concentrated, product design project.

Studying on the IT Product Development programme

The course programme at the Bachelor's degree programme in IT Product Development is based on lectures and exercises in small class. Your study group is an important part of the degree programme and group work takes up a lot of time. You will be studying at the IT City Katrinebjerg, which is where Aarhus University has gathered all of its IT study programmes and research. The degree programme works closely with Aarhus School of Engineering on product design teaching.

A degree programme with projects in focus

During your studies, you will be involved in several large projects and you will focus on an issue or problem within IT Product Development together with your project group. The projects have different perspectives so that you will come to work within areas such as innovation, social and aesthetic interaction and business processes.

Career opportunities

Depending on the specialisation you choose, you can apply for different Master’s degree programmes. This can lead to job opportunities as product developer, design process manager or software developer. During the degree programme you will have good opportunities for making contact with IT companies, not only in connection with courses and projects, but also in relation to finding a relevant student job.

Admission requirements

Admission area number: 22170

To be eligible for admission to this degree programme, you must fulfil the following requirements:

1. A qualifying examination 

2. Grade requirements: You will need both an average grade of at least 7.0 on your overall qualifying examination (incl. any bonus for extra A-level subjects) and an average grade of at least 7.0 in Mathematics A specifically (on the Danish 7-point grading scale).

3. The following specific admission requirements:

  • Mathematics A
  • Danish A
  • English B

If there are one or more subjects which you have not completed, you can take them as supplementary courses at upper secondary school level or a summer supplementary courses (conditional admission).

The admission requirements must be met and documented by 5 July of the year of application, unless you are applying for conditional admission.

If you don’t meet the grade requirements

If you don’t meet, or don’t expect to meet, the grade requirements of an average grade of at least 7.0 io your qualifying examination and an average grade of at least 7.0 in Mathematics A, you can apply for admission through an entrance examination. Completing the entrance examination is equivalent to fulfilling the grade requirements, but does not guarantee admission.

Applicants who wish to take part in the entrance examination must apply before the deadline on 15 March at 12:00 (quota 2)

Quota 2

Like quota 1 applicants, quota 2 applicants must have passed a qualifying examination, and they must also fulfil the specific admission requirements above. All quota 2 applicants will be invited to take an entrance examination.

If there are more qualified applicants than quota 2 places, the applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  1. Your score from the entrance examination
  2. Your average grade in Mathematics A
  3. A concrete assessment of your academic qualifications for admission (for example average grade from your qualifying examination, special permission or similar relevant selection criteria)

Regarding admission 2020

If there are more qualified candidates than the number of seats in quota 2, the following criteria will be included in an overall assessment of the applications:

  • Score from the admission test
  • Average of particularly relevant subjects (quota 2 subjects, see below)

Student life

The course programme at IT Product Development

The teaching at IT Product Development combines traditional instruction with a number of large projects which will give you the opportunity to concentrate on a long-term IT development project. Here you will be involved in the many phases of a development process, including conceptualisation, design, prototyping, testing and evaluation.

You should expect to spend approximately 20 hours a week on teaching and just as many hours of reading and project work.

Lively study environment

Aarhus University has gathered all its IT degree programmes in the IT City Katrinebjerg. More than 2,500 students are based here, while the active student associations give you plenty of opportunities to get the most out of the many cross-disciplinary and social contexts in the IT city.

Opportunity to continue your studies

The Bachelor's degree programme in IT Product Development is designed as a three-year Bachelor’s degree programme, which can be followed by a two-year Master’s degree programme in IT Product Development, which will earn you the title of Master of Science (MSc).You can also apply for enrolment in the PhD degree programme while taking your Master’s degree programme. All three degree programmes are self-contained programmes that you can use to apply for jobs - in other words, you can find a job after three, five or eight years of study.

Product development, project management or programming - you have many options

As a graduate in IT Product Development you work as a product developer, project manager or design process manager. Your career opportunities also depend on the specialisation you choose during your degree programme. If you choose the specialisation in product design, you will use IT to design physical products such as e.g. interactive products and installations, while if you specialise in software, you will work on the development of software systems and web services. With a specialisation in business, you can work within finance, project management and business models and strategy.
