Tuition fees and application fee

  • Students from outside the EU are generally required to pay tuition and application fee (with a few exemptions). 
  • EU/EEA and Swiss citizens are not liable to pay fees.
     
  • Please note: Aarhus University does not offer scholarships for any of our Bachelor’s degree programmes.

Are you a paying applicant?

You will be assessed as a paying applicant if the following applies to you: 

  • you are not an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.


AND 

  • you do not have a Danish residence that exempts you from payment of tuition fees. In order to find information about which types of residence permits that exempts you from payment of tuition fees please see here.


AND 

  • you do not have a permanent address in Denmark at the time of the application.

Application and answer to your application

Application and documentation deadline: 15 March at 12.00 noon. 

Deadline for paying the application fee: 15 March. If you have not paid the application fee by this deadline, your application will be cancelled. 

You will receive an answer to your application by 1 June.  

Who is admitted? 

As a paying applicant, you must document that you fulfil the general requirement of a qualifying entry examination AND that you fulfil the specific admission requirements. As a paying applicant, you must be aware of the English language requirement. 

As a paying applicant, your application can only be assessed if you have finished your qualifying exam prior to 15 March in the year of application. This means that paying applicants must have uploaded all of their educational documents including final diploma and transcripts and have paid the application fee no later than 15 March. 

Therefore, applicants graduating in the year of application do not meet the admission requirement of a qualifying entry examination within the application deadline.      

Paying applicants usually have to apply for a Danish study residence permit and must pay tuition fees for their studies at Aarhus University. 

Furthermore as a paying applicant, you must also pay an application fee of 100 EURO in order to have your application(s) processed.

Application fee

You are required to pay an application fee of 100 EUR (750 DKK) per applicant in order to have your application(s) processed, if you are a paying applicant. You are considered a paying applicant, if you are a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen and you do not hold a residence permit that exempts you from paying tuition fee.

Please note that the payment deadline is 15 March. If you have not paid by 15 March your application will not be processed and you cannot be offered admission.


Terms of payment 

  • You must pay the application fee when you apply for admission and 15 March at the latest.
  • Payment can only be made in EURO and only through the web shop.
  • Your receipt for payment must be uploaded to each of your applications for admission.
  • Your application(s) will only be processed if the total application fee is paid by the application deadline.


Refund policy 

  • Your application fee will be reimbursed if you accept an offer of admission, have paid your tuition fee, and are still enrolled at Aarhus University by 1 October.
  • The application fee will only be reimbursed through the web shop.
  • If you are not offered admission, your application fee will not be reimbursed.

Exemptions from payment of application fee and tuition fees

Exempt from payment of application fee and tuition fee are non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens who: 

  • Hold a permanent residence permit in Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands). 
  • Hold a permanent residence permit in another Nordic country (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland), provided you maintain your permanent residency in that country while being enrolled at Aarhus University. If you move to Denmark, you are liable to pay tuition fees. 
    To remain exempt from payment of tuition fees, you must provide documentation of your continued official residency in the other Nordic country at the end of each semester, e.g. by submitting documentation of your tax liability in the relevant Nordic country. 
  • Have been granted a temporary residence permit cf. the Danish Aliens Act 
  • Section 7(1) and section 8(1) of the Danish Aliens Act (convention refugees); 
  • Section 7(2) and section 8(2) of the Danish Aliens Act (foreigners with protection status); 
  • Section 7(3) of the Danish Aliens Act (foreigners with temporary protection status)); 
  • Section 9 b (1) of the Danish Aliens Act (foreigners with humanitarian protection status); 
  • Section 9(1) or 9c(1) of the Danish Aliens Act as a consequence of a familial relationship to a foreigner with a residence permit pursuant to section 7(1) or 7(2) or 7(3) or section 8(1) or (2) of the Danish Aliens Act (family reunification); 
  • Section 9 M (1) of the Danish Aliens Act and your parent(s) has/have been granted a residence permit pursuant to Section 9A of the Danish Aliens Act. 
  • Are an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen. 
  • Have obtained EU status pursuant to the Executive Order on Residence in Denmark for Aliens Falling within the Rules of the European Union (the EU Residence Order). 
  • Have dual nationality (EU/EEA + non EU/EEA) and decide to enter Denmark as an EU/EEA citizen. 
  • Hold a temporary residence permit in Denmark according to Law no. 2055 of 16 November 2021 regarding persons who in Afghanistan have provided support to Danish authorities etc. 
  • Hold a temporary residence permit in Denmark according to Law no. 324 of 16 March 2022 regarding persons who have been displaced from Ukraine. 


Applicants with a temporary work permit in Denmark (e.g. green card) must pay application fee.

Legal basis 

The rules regarding exemption of payment of tuition fees refer to Ministerial Order no. 764 of 19 June 2024 on funding and auditing at Danish universities, including amendments and explanatory notes.

Payment and study residence permit 

You cannot obtain a study residence permit in Denmark without having paid the tuition fee. 
Aarhus University cannot start the process of applying for your study residence permit with The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration before you have paid the tuition fee. 

After that date, the Agency will spend up to two months processing your application for a study residence permit. 

Therefore, we strongly recommend that you pay the tuition fee as soon as possible and no later than 15 June in order for you to obtain your study residence permit in due time before commencement of studies.

Terms of payment and refund policy

Payment and fees 

  • Tuition fees are payable biannually before the start of each semester. 
  • The instalment paid per semester corresponds to 30 ECTS credits. 
  • It is not possible for full-degree students to pay tuition fees in smaller instalments. 
  • Students with a workload in excess of 30 ECTS credits per semester are billed separately for the additional ECTS credits. 
  • The tuition fees are paid for the total number of ECTS credits, regardless of the period of enrolment. 
  • Books and other course material are not included in the tuition fees. 
  • The tuition fees payable for the individual study programmes are shown in the list of tuition fee rates


Payment on commencement of studies (first semester) 

  • The tuition fees must be received by the university 15 June at the latest (summer admission to Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes). 
  • The deadline for payment of tuition fees is 1 December for winter admission to Master’s degree programmes. 
  • The early deadline is to ensure that students obtain a study residence permit in Denmark in due time before commencement of studies. 
  • In the case of non-payment of the tuition fees by the due date, the offer of admission is withdrawn. 
  • No refunding of tuition fees is possible after the date of commencement of studies. 
  • Students who receive federal aid from the U.S. government to fund their studies are not required to pay tuition until they have received their first loan disbursement, which occurs around the month of October for the autumn semester, and February for the spring semester. Any refunds are deposited to the student's account. 


Payment for subsequent semesters 

  • As from the second semester, tuition fees must be received by the university prior to the start of the semester, i.e. by 1 September for the autumn semester and by 1 February for the spring semester. 
  • The payment of tuition fees is for 30 ECTS credits per semester for the prescribed standard number of semesters for the completion of the degree programme. After the prescribed standard period of study, the degree programme is deemed to have been paid for, and enrolment may be prolonged without additional tuition fees being charged. 
  • Students who are granted a credit transfer from earlier studies may be charged reduced tuition fees. The reduced tuition fees are charged for the semester in respect of which the credit transfer is granted and based on the ECTS weighting approved by the university. 


Delays and special leave 

  • Tuition fees corresponding to 30 ECTS credits are paid in advance for each semester until the degree programme has been paid for, regardless of delays relative to the prescribed standard period of study. 
  • The tuition fees entitle students to three exam attempts in accordance with the applicable exam regulations. 
  • No tuition fees are payable by students who have been granted special leave from the start of a semester, regardless of the period of leave. The payment of tuition fees is resumed as from the first semester following the end of the period of leave. 
  • If special leave is granted after the first date of a semester in respect of which tuition fees have been paid, the tuition fees will not be refunded to the student, but will be transferred to the first semester following the end of the period of leave. 
  • The study activity rules on special leave apply irrespective of the payment of tuition fees. 


Payment in case of changed/expired residence status in Denmark 

  • Students who are granted a permanent residence permit in Denmark in the course of a semester will still have to pay tuition fees until the following semester if the validity of the residence permit falls after 1 March for the spring semester and after 1 October for the autumn semester. 
  • Students who are granted a permanent residence permit in Denmark which is valid from before 1 March in the spring semester and before 1 October in the autumn semester may apply for a refund of the tuition fees paid for the relevant semester, always provided that proper documentation for the new residence permit is submitted. If the residence permit is valid from a later date, the tuition fees paid for the relevant semester are not refunded. 
  • Applicants who at the time of application have a temporary residence permit “with a view to” or “with the possibility of” permanent residency in Denmark that expires before 1 October (for the autumn semester) and before 1 March (for the spring semester) must pay tuition fees, unless they no later than 1 April (commencement of study 1 September) or 1 November (commencement of study 1 February) provide a letter of receipt from the issuing Danish authority that they have applied for a renewal of the current residence permit in Denmark. 
  • In the event that a student’s status changes in the course of a semester to the effect that the student no longer holds a permanent residence permit in Denmark, tuition fees must be paid from the following semester. 
  • Students are required to provide the university with documentation of any such change of status. 


Payment in case of changed residence status in the EU/EEA 

  • Non-EU/EEA students with a residence permit in the EU/EEA, but without EU/EEA citizenship, cannot be exempted from payment of tuition fee. 
  • Students who are granted status as an EU/EEA national, valid from before 1 March in the spring semester and before 1 October in the autumn semester, may apply for a refund of the tuition fees paid for the relevant semester, always provided that proper documentation for the new residency is submitted. 
  • Students who change their residency status from non-EU/EEA national to EU/EEA national in the course of a semester will still have to pay tuition fees until the following semester if the validity of the change to EU/EEA national status falls after 1 March for the spring semester and after 1 October for the autumn semester. 


The above is stipulated pursuant to Section 3 of the 

Ministerial Order no. 764 of 19 June 2024 on funding and auditing at Danish universities, including amendments and explanatory notes. 

Other costs and expenses

  • Books and other course material are not covered by the tuition fee. 
  • No living expenses are covered by the tuition fee. 


Health insurance 

Once you have a Danish CPR number, health insurance is covered by the Danish state.
